The 2011 UF1R Grand Prix Season Review Part 3 - Awards!
The “F*ck not Valencia again!” award for worst race of the season: East London

Kind of hard to call a worst race of the season this year, but this was…well, pretty ordinary. The track itself was dull and didn’t provide anywhere near the craziness that Avus did. Roy won easily despite Gr3y keeping lose for a while, the lack of Sammy up front just made it a very dull race at the top. We may have had 3 close battles down the field, for 5th between Nitrous and Freeman, 7th between Demich and Arzack and 9th between Baxter and Bob, but Freeman was eventually given a penalty for a pit violation sending him to 10th and the track itself was perfect for close battles so much that close finishes were to be expected. A field of 16 only arrived and only 13 of those finished, also earning it the least finishers in a GP this season. A general lack of excitement in an exciting season gets this violin.

Dishonourable Mentions: Mosport Park, Watkins Glen, Valencia Urban (naturally :P

Most disappointing performance: Speedy

Not to be overly harsh considering the circumstances of his latter part of the year, but Speedy ultimately should have done more this season than just have one win. His pace was excellent at times, especially in qualifying, and he showed an improvement that could have won him the Pool C championship very easily. He even won his first race at Brands Hatch in an impressive performance. However, the fact he didn’t show this more often is just disappointing. His pace just wasn’t enough in the races he raced part from a select few, but I’m sure he can only improve when he returns to the championship :)

Dishonourable mentions: SpongeBoB, NightFire

The Prancing Horse Award for most disappointing team: Virgin Racing

For a team most thought would be standing a chance for the championship, having no drivers at the end of the season paints the sad story perfectly. Both members just didn’t appear enough in the latter part of the season especially to stand a chance, and when they did their performances were way off where they should have been. It’s a sad end to a team that did very well last season, so hopefully their fortunes change as Marussia Racing next season!

Dishonourable mentions: Lotus Renault, Red Bull Racing

The Ready for Lunch award for absolute silliest act conducted all season: The Food Brothers - Chriise and Hami

In my mind, these two should have never been members of the team for this season. They ultimately took up spots on the grid knowing fully well they could never finish and then tried to hide the fact to keep their place in the championship by retiring on purpose. If you can’t race, you can’t race, so please tell us if you can’t and don’t try to be a team member only to race for a few minutes!

Dishonourable Mentions: Miserable Ed on TS, freshrubber’s appearance on TS during a GP which led to his ban

Most controversial moment: NightFire at Mont Tremblant- Disqualification-gate

A controversial rule change with only half the field had knowledge of led to a penalty which was argued as being unreasonable by NightFire. Only managed to downgrade it to a 60 second penalty after a long process of talking, and even then it still remains as to whether a penalty was necessary. The result stands as it is but this result could have changed the constructors championship completely!

Dishonourable mentions: Jake's jump starts and the replay rule change, Sammy nearly quitting after Brands Hatch, Rossco and his horn at Phoenix

And the Ultimate Golden Violin for the person who most deserved a violin all season: Edster

This was kinda expected I’m sure, seeing as the violin has basically been linked with him all season. Cheer up a bit more mate! :P

Dishonourable mention: Freeman

And now, the good ones, the Golden Muscles of Love. :P

The “F*ck yes Spa!” award for best race of the year: Nordschleife

Yeah you better believe it Roy :P. This race had everything, an amazing fight for the lead that was decided on the final corner, a few amazing crashes, a new podium placer in Jake and some close racing that was impressive for such a difficult track. This was a race many will never forget!

Honourable mentions: Nivelles-Baulers (very close 2nd here!), Bathurst, Avus

Best newcomer: Edster

The best newcomer is for anyone who joined for the first time this season, and for sure it was Ed that had the most impact in the championship this season considering when he started. Constantly improving and showing that he has pace over a single lap, 2012 will definitely be a better finishing season for the always-complaining kid from England. :P

Runner-up: Silicnt

Best rookie: Jake

The best rookie is for the people that were starting their first full season of the championship after having raced in races in 2010, and here it is easily Jakes award. Already showing signs of speed late in 2010, Jake impressed so much this year that he could have theoretically won Pool C by September had he not run into his mid-season issues. Expect Jake in his second season to be a huge contender in the Pool B field!

Runner-up: Baxter

Best returning racer: Rossco

Demich had this award wrapped up about 2 months ago but since then Rossco has done so much and ultimately became their fastest driver. His improvement from the lowly ranks to a podium in Mexico showed his progress this season and ultimately he looks to be in Pool B next year and fighting for more podiums.

Runner-up: Demich

The Iron award for the most overall improved driver: Jake

Jake's run this year for the first dozen or so races reminded me of Iron’s breakout season last year, which is what this award is named after :P Jake managed a season of impressive displays that was outpacing most of Pool B’s drivers, let alone Pool C, so he deserves the award here. Next season could be a year of seeing Jake stepping up to challenge the top racers and possibly getting a win like Iron this year.

Runners-up: Rossco, Demich, Edster, Iron

Most Dedicated Racer Award and Most Wanted Teammate Award: TIE! RoyBoy and deudeuf

The Team Lotus boys outdid everyone this year. Roy once again showed the practice makes perfect, being super-fast all-week during practice just through hard work. And everyone’s favourite Frenchie deudeuf also wins here as his efforts in turning up every single week and finishing where he does and earning valuable points to a team, which is also why these two are also tied for the most wanted teammate award.

Honourable mentions: Gr3y, Raiden , Iron, NightFire

Funniest Moment and Funniest Horn: Spongebob having a laugh

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCtGq6AYPI0 The video says it all, caused endless laughter for many people for weeks on end. :D

Honourable mentions: Jake and the Love Muscle, Demich’s Angry Shuffling, “Nee-trous” by Demich, Stop It Desty!, Gecko, Baxter’s a racer!

Funniest racer: Demich

He created angry shuffling and the only way to pronounce nitrous ever again, the Estonian jokester wins this one pretty easily!

Honourable mentions: SpongeBoB, Jake, RoyBoy, Baxter

And now, the ultimate award, the Racer of the Year goes to…
IT’S A THREE WAY F*CKING TIE!
Iron, Sammy and RoyBoy!

Oh boy, I just couldn’t separate our three-peating champ, his younger Belgian countryman and the tireless efforts of the nearly-40 RoyBoy. Sammy’s season may have had more struggles than last year, but despite all this he still won the championship very convincingly and he proves he is still the one to beat on a Sunday! Iron also deserves this award. Iron’s season has impressed me even more than last year, all simply due to being so very consistently a new contender to Roy and Sammy’s dominance and finally getting race win for himself at the UF1R Home Circuit in Round 20. He now looks to being a title contender to try and break Sammy’s dominance. And Roy…quite simply no one has put in the effort Roy has done all year. More hours than anyone and even netting a few wins to boot, without Roy this team wouldn’t be here and ultimately, he deserves this award in my eyes!

Honourable mentions: deudeuf, Jake
